“Surviving First Year PhD: Welcome to BISA PGN” was 2013’s new event for the PGN Committee, building on the established success of the funding competition and annual conference.
The intention was for a friendly, peer-led and practical focused day where new International Studies PhDs could discuss common hopes and fears, whilst colleagues spoke to the question of “What I know now that I wish I knew then”.
Held at City University London, the event was attended by PhD students from 16 universities across the UK. Featuring sessions on a wide variety of topics, including how to work well with your supervisor, getting the most from conferences and how to be published, the day was designed to inform new PhD students on everything they need to know at the start of their course.
Feedback showed the day to have been a huge success, with every participant either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the event. Despite being the first such event BISA PGN has organised, it is sure to become a mainstay for years to come.
